Under The Flag

Beneath the flags, the gods, the borders and the teams, one animal runs the same old code in 8 billion copies. We dress it in a costume, then mistake the costume for who we are.
THE SAME ANIMAL, 8 BILLION TIMES

Take away the passport and the prayer and the jersey and you find the same creature underneath, everywhere on earth.

It runs on one drive. Stay alive.

But this is the only animal that knows it will die. And that knowledge changes everything. A drive that knows it will lose cannot stop at the body. So it reaches further.

It grips the group, because alone, the body never lasted long. It reaches for meaning, because a name can outlive the skin that carried it. The hunger to belong and the hunger to matter are not extra drives. They are the same drive, reaching past the body.

You can slice the hungers into three or six or a thousand. People have built careers on the counting. Follow any one of them down and you hit the same root. Do not die. Not the body. Not the name.

Now copy that animal 8 billion times and let the copies collide. That collision is the economy, the border, the war, the church. Nobody designed it. It is what you get when 8 billion survival brains grab, fear, hoard and pick sides at once.

THE SIGNAL IS NOT THE SELF

We run on signals. Fear, anger, belief, the pull to belong. Every one of them is the same drive in a different uniform. Fear guards the body. Anger guards your standing. Belonging guards your place inside the shield of the group. Belief guards the story that your life will count. One job, many alarms.

Somewhere we confused the signal with the self. Anger is not you, it is an alarm. Belief is not truth, it is a handhold in the dark. Identity is not fixed, it is the costume the machine grabbed to feel safe.

THEN WE FORGET WE ARE WEARING IT

The costume does its job. The flag makes the frightened animal feel large. The god makes the short life feel endless. The side makes the lonely one feel held. Each costume makes the same old promise. You will not die. Not the body. Not the name.

So far, so human.

The trick is what happens next. We stop seeing the costume as a costume and become certain it is us. Then anyone in a different costume is not another scared animal. He is a threat to the self, and the alarm fires.

NO VILLAIN

There is no enemy at the bottom of this. No one is evil and nothing is broken. It is one frightened, magnificent animal, 8 billion copies of it, each sure its costume is the only real one, each running the same old drive in the dark.

That is the release. You can stop hunting for the bad guy, because there is not one. There is only the machine, and the machine is not a conspiracy. It is a reflection.

THE TURN

See the costume as a costume, on yourself first, and the man across the flag changes. He is running your exact code, certain his costume is real the same way you are certain of yours. The war was never good against evil. It was the same machine meeting its own reflection.

You cannot remove the code. It does not reprogram on command, and anyone who says just think differently is selling you something. But you can see it. Seeing it is the half second where everything starts to change.

So here is the practice. Next time the alarm fires at a different costume, look down at your own first.

He is not your enemy. He is you, in a different uniform, trying not to die.
